Job Description

Project Background:

The Nature Conservancy is working in the Central Indian Highlands (CIH) region (across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh) to implement several terrestrial and freshwater conservation projects. This landscape is rich in biodiversity, large tracts of high-quality tropical forests, and the headwaters of major peninsular rivers. The landscape has a population of around 55 million, two-thirds of which reside in rural areas. Adivasis constitute nearly a quarter of the total population.

Within this context, TNC is implementing field projects and analysis to support biodiversity, carbon, and livelihood benefits. We have four major areas of work within our Lands program – integrated landscape design to conserve high value conservation lands and support sustainable development, community conservation to protect and restore forest and common lands through assisted natural regeneration activities, agroforestry and rewilding actions on agricultural and FRA lands, and riparian revegetation projects with communities.

Our current field project portfolio includes riparian revegetation with local communities and government, establishing new agroforestry clusters, and scoping opportunities for community-based conservation measures across the landscape. Over the next several years, we will be launching several new field projects while ensuring current projects are successfully implemented with partners and achieving the desired results.

We are seeking a Field Projectsand Partners Consultant to help implement field projects, scope and design new projects, build partnerships and relationships across the landscape, and broadly support our greater conservation strategy within the Central Indian Highlands.

The initial phase of this Contract will focus on supporting the design and implementation of our riparian revegetation work along the Narmada River in Hoshangabad district, Madhya Pradesh. Our current project goal is tosupport improved conservation and revegetation along 100 kilometres of riparian zone of Narmada in the CIH through community-based approaches that support local livelihoods.

We currently have two sites in progress with local communities and government and have selected a third site for revegetation activities. In the near term, we will implement additional sites and test new methods for revegetation and/or restorationto improve the conservation outcomes. The Consultant will work with our current team members to initially coordinate implementation, outreach, and overall riparian revegetation and restoration project strategy.

As this project progresses, the Consultant role will also scope and establish new partnerships and potential projects related to other Central Indian Highlands landscape strategies, such as assisted natural regeneration, agroforestry, and /or other conservation activities.

This position is for a long-term consultant with annual renewal based on performance and agreed upon deliverables.

Scope of Work:

The initial phase of this contract (July 2019 – June 2020) will focus on successful implementation and expansion of the riparian revegetation projects in Hoshangabad District, building new partnerships at field, district and state level, and scoping additional potential field projects.
