Summary

Cradled in the lap of the Western Ghats, lies the city of Coimbatore. The life line of Coimbatore is the River Noyyal. Originating in the Vellingiri Hills of the Western Ghats. a major part of River Noyyal flows through the city of Coimbatore. In her 160 km long journey, Noyyal nourishes Coimbatore,Tiruppur, Erode and Karur districts. About 38, 000 acres of agricultural lands are directly irrigated through the canal and system tanks of River Today, Noyyal is under extreme threat due to over-exploitation and pollution. The proliferation of industries clubbed with population growth and urbanization, resulted in depletion of ground water beyond economical pumping state. A UNDP study, in the 1980s, declared Coimbatore drought-prone, and stated that it had the fastest depletion of ground water level in the whole world. The year 2003 witnessed Coimbatore at its worst, with ground water table levels dipping below 1000 feet, massive deforestation and rampant scarcity of even drinking water.
