Summary

The Shreni Community Trust, an ‘Enterprise with Purpose’ is a livelihood sector-based non-profit. Shrenis functions to increase access to information and opportunities for occupational communities in the unorganised or informal sector. Our primary initiative, Shrenis Occupational Network, allows members of various occupations to form professional connections that allow them increased access to all players in the game. At present, we have 1700 members spread across 10 occupational groups and are growing at a steady pace. This includes handloom weavers, power loom weavers, wood-inlay artists, wood-carving artists, toy-makers, carpenters, tailors, embroiders, beauticians, hospitality workers, etc. who are spread across parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu. Shrenis also engages in various capacity building endeavours such as handloom revival programs, training programs, and specialised workshops amongst others.

Causes Working On

Our ultimate goal is to ensure fair wages and instil some modicum of structure and stability to the informal sector while trying to rekindle the same essence of autonomy, economic structure, and community sentiment historically present in Indian producer communities, known as ‘shrenis’. We aim to achieve this by actively moving away from the benefactor/beneficiary binary and beyond the ‘formal/informal sector’ dichotomy. We hope to establish a system of standards that eventually can bridge the gap between the informal and formal sector.
