Summary

Swaraj Ashram is located on the opposite banks of river Kathajodi in Cuttack district, Odisha. Founded in March 1921 the Ashram was Gandhi’s home on his first visit to Odisha. It is said that it was from here that Gandhi would go to the banks of the Kathajodi river in the mornings to address public gatherings. The Ashram also played a crucial role in India’s freedom movement as many leaders held their meetings at the Ashram whenever they came to Cuttack. On 13 March 1921, the first Congress Committee session took place at the Ashram, wherein the first twelve members of the All-India Congress Committee were appointed. The Ashram was also used to train workers and facilitate the committee’s work concerning all aspects of the freedom struggle. It also became the centre for the activities that were related to the Non-Cooperation Movement, namely the Khadi Movement.
