There are over 52 million children in India with developmental disabilities and over 650,000 in Mumbai alone. Out of these, not even a quarter have access to quality care. Ummeed, meaning ‘hope’, was founded in 2001 by Dr Vibha Krishnamurthy, one of India’s first developmental pediatricians, as a not-for-profit organization with the vision of helping children with and at risk of developmental disabilities reach their full potential and be included in society. For over two decades, Ummeed has, through its ‘family-centered approach’, been addressing the issues of early identification, early and appropriate intervention, participation and empowerment of children with developmental disabilities and families through all its work.
