Job Description

Summary of organization

Nari Gunjan is a women’s organization started in 1987 for women of grassroots – Dalit, poor, agricultural laborers’, landless and rural. These women constantly experience deprivations of all sorts, economically over dependent on others for even minor needs, socially discriminated due to their low social status, a non-entity politically, but their votes sought after, and culturally almost nonexistent. Women needed to come together in order to experience their strength and to make their voices heard. These women belonging to various villages of Danapur Block in Patna district are victims of atrocities based on caste, gender and class. Often the caste tensions would result in women being targeted in verbal abuse and even in physical attacks. Often, they are exploited in their work place and minimum wages were not paid to them nor were wages paid in time. They were deprived of their rights and entitlements, like Public Distribution system that is supposed to act as Fair price shops, Social security pensions and stipends for the education of their children. Sexual abuse and oppression were a regular happening but women were not able to stand up and fight against their perpetrators. There was the issue of untouched ability and discrimination in the society and children experienced it in the schools.

At this juncture it was important for the women to come together and organize themselves to make a difference in their lives and to exert themselves as women who are equal. In 1986 Meetings with women and orienting them for a better and respectful life was seen as a necessity. Attending meetings gave them the opportunity to become more concertized and aware of their rights as women and as citizens of this country. They began to understand what it means to be equal in a society where men hold the sway and women are treated as second class citizens. Women began to question why they should become victims of domestic violence and atrocities of every kind both in public and private sphere. With the women becoming more and more aware and organized, it was felt that and organization of rural, Dalit and agricultural laborers’ come together to form it and that was the beginning of Nari Gunjan, Women’s Voice, in 1987.
