Position: Program Manager (DISPECS)

Location : Bangalore, India

Background

Since 2016, Project DEFY has empowered marginalised communities across Asia and Africa to be part of a paradigm where communities unlock their potential to solve their own local socio-economic problems. 

Project DEFY has set up learning spaces called Nooks within marginalised communities which transfers the choice of learning back into the hands of learners. 

Using the same community-led and community-first philosophy, Project DEFY conceptualised DISPECS which seeks to empower marginalised communities to mitigate the harmful effects of Natural Disasters and drastically reduce their dependence on external stakeholders and agencies. 

Position Summary: 

The Program Manager will report to the CEO at Project DEFY and will manage the overall project. The program lead will define timelines, build partnerships, lead fundraising and implementation.

DISPECS (DIsaster PreparEd Community Spaces) is a program in disaster preparedness with the vision of making communities around the globe self-reliant in the face of a disaster.

Duration: 

The role will be a consulting contract renewable at the end of 12 months from the starting date based on mutual discussion. 

Relevant Work Experience Requirement?: 4-6 yrs 

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the implementation and project management of DISPECS by liasioning with various partners, members and communities
• Set clear team goals and KPIs
• Oversee day-to-day teams' operation and performance
• Do regular performance evaluation
• Create a healthy and motivating work environment 
• Listen to team members’ feedback and resolve any issues or conflicts
• Represent DEFY and communicate our needs and requirements to partners and funders while also being answerable for our commitments
• Research and identify opportunities for new potential partners(design/deployment) in line with the program's growth strategy
• Prepare the relevant marketing materials and communication strategy along with the communication team to secure prospective partners and funders
• Lead the documentation of DISPECS and report writing. Create internal and external reports for various stakeholders

Salary Range: ?60,000 to ?75,000 per month

Hiring approach: The Program Manager is hired directly by the DEFY core team in Bangalore.

The candidates must go through the 3-step hiring approach of DEFY, consisting of General Interview, Maker and Project Management task & Final interview. 

Eligibility Criteria

Desired skills, qualities and experience: 

• Job Related
• Proven track record in leading projects and teams in complex environments and diverse contexts, with multiple partners involved. Entrepreneurial experience is a big plus
• Adept with building partnerships with governments, nonprofits and funding agencies
• Demonstrated ability to handle a heavy workload with a high degree of adaptability, strong problem-solving skills, and to effectively work on and manage multiple tasks
• Ability to lead implementation while staying on-ground for extended periods.
• Prior experience of working in international open-source projects for designing and/or deployment is required
• Ability to draft proposals
• Experienced in leading fundraising independently
• Proven track record of community development experience, having worked across sectors like livelihood, health, disaster preparedness etc
• Good understanding of impact, Measurement and Evaluation frameworks
• Basic understanding of social media

• Leadership
• Prior experience in leading a team is highly preferred
• Ability to deal with and navigate through uncertainty
• Must be a strong team player with the ability to establish effective working relationships with peers and superiors 
• Good in persuasive communication and conflict resolution skills
• Must have a high degree of faith in the idea of disaster preparedness and DISPECS.

• Technical
• Advanced knowledge of relevant softwares, including MS Office - Excel, Powerpoint, and Word
• Familiarity with web based design tools (e.g Canva), project management tools and other website management/social media tools
• Experienced in documentation - report generation and creating SoPs and operation documents
• Intermediate knowledge in budgets and finance planning/ management
• Familiarity with the tenets of Design Thinking or other design methodologies.

• Soft Skills
• Strong fluency in the English language, with clear articulation of thoughts and requirements when representing the organization in front of partners/ funders.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated relationship-building skills, positive and proactive attitude
